Yesterday vs. Today

Yesterday, a summer like day. Today, more like spring.

Yesterday, it rained here and there. Today, no rain in sight.

Yesterday, a warm 78 degrees. Today, a cooler 53 degrees.

Yesterday, the sun made an appearance after its game of hide-and-seek with the clouds. Today, mostly sunny with clear blue skies.

Yesterday, the wind gained strength as the day moved forward. Today, the wind diminished as the day continued.

Yesterday, we enjoyed being outside. Today, stayed indoors.

Yesterday
Today

Yesterday, just me and the girls. Today, the girls and me with Matt.

Yesterday, went out back to get out of the house. Today, Matt and I decided to take a drive to get out of the house.

Doodling with Mo

After reading sallydonnelly11’s slice yesterday on Lunch Doodle with Mo Willems, I was curious and decided to check it out. I sent out the link to my students, but why not check it out too?

Wow! So glad I did! Today’s Lunch Doodle was inspired by Mo Willems’ book, Nanette’s Baguette. The whole city is made out of toilet paper rolls! He shared some buildings used in the book. He mentioned his whole studio was filled with buildings made of cardboard boxes for the city!

Mo Willems encouraged children to make a village. He showed his drawings from Nanette’s Baguette. All his drawers neatly organized with labels. He recommended to make puppets using toilet paper or paper towel rolls. He suggested to use the puppets to have dialogue (just started discussing with my Kindergarten writers before the pandemic). Would be perfect practice to act out a play and have dialogue between the characters! Mo Willems also shared downloadable puppets to color and use for a play. Buildings that are created could be used for the set for the play! So kid-friendly! So fun! Allows students to be creative and engage in dramatic play!

The Q&A session and behind the scenes are a great way for students to get a glimpse into the world of Mo Willems!

I decided to email my parents about my experience and included a picture of my doodle. I encouraged them to check out Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems and send me pictures of their child’s doodle. I have many artists in my classroom so knew it would be perfect for them! I quickly received emails in response. Got to see some of my kiddos with their smiling faces and pictures. Smiles immediately came across my face. Was just what I needed!

This is my Lunch Doodle (realize not the greatest at proportions!).

My Outlet

I’ve been taking one day at time as I figure out this new schedule of mine. More time to focus on myself. More time to…

Work out!

I try to get in some sort of workout three days a week. Depending on the week, sometimes less sometimes more (rarely more). Now with all the extra time, I find myself doing a workout almost daily since my gym is accommodating its members by remotely hosting workouts live on Instagram! So far this week…yoga, a run outside (had to take advantage of the beautiful day), and barre.

A workout for me is so much more than getting into physical shape. It’s for my mental and emotional state of mind as well. It is an escape. It is a stress-reliever. It is an attitude adjustment. It is a mood changer. It has so many benefits!

I had many health issues for years. I never thought I would be running 5Ks or doing various workouts. I overcame many obstacles over the years. Exercise has been extremely beneficial. Exercise is my outlet. Exercise is my victory!

Missing A Lot Today

As I sip my coffee from a mug I received from one of my students, I think about how much I miss my students. Their smiles. Their laughs. Their eagerness to learn. The excitement and pride on their faces when they have used a strategy they learned in the book they are making. Their pride when they are able to decode a word. The excitement when they find a sight word in their reading. The joy and pride of counting to 100 for the first time. Their love for school. I miss teaching my kindergarteners. I miss watching them grow as readers, writers, scientists, and mathematicians.

I received this email of appreciation back from a parent after sending some enrichment activities students could do at home. It reassured me that I can help my students from afar. I love my students and teaching. I hope to inspire them. I long for the day we can be together again.

Taking a Break

My local gym has started doing live classes through Instagram and Facebook during this difficult time. What was on today’s schedule at noon?

Yoga!!!

Yes! I need some time to escape. Free my mind of the stress, worry, uncertainty, and loneliness.

Forty minutes of mindfulness and stretching. Not the same as being in the class. Trying to focus on my phone while doing each pose. Repositioning it so I can ensure I’m doing what she is doing. Need the visual. I can’t just listen to her give the directions. Not totally being in the moment since continuously reaching or moving my phone for a better visual. Definitely better than nothing. Still feel the positive effects.

Thankful for The Edge. Thankful for the instructors making these videos. Thankful I practiced yoga today.

Feeling rejuvenated.

Namaste.

Don’t forget to take care of yourself, too!

An Amazing Experience

We went to iFly for my best friend’s birthday last summer. It was the first time for all of us. Cindy wants to go skydiving someday. I always tell her, “Have fun. There is NO WAY I will go.” iFly seemed like a valid alternative that I was willing to try despite all the butterflies I had in my stomach (mix of nervousness, uncertainty, and excitement).

Anticipation as we wait. Watching others taking flight. Time to get into our suits. We sit in a classroom learning the dos and don’ts of flying. Helmets and goggles on. Earplugs in.

It is our turn. We step into a wind blowing tube. There is a bench while you wait for your turn. Keep legs straight and arms out bent, I remind myself as I gingerly step inside the tube.

Wind distorting your face. An experienced trainer keeping me where I need to be and giving me hints along the way. An unique experience indeed! So freeing and exhilarating!

I am glad Cindy encouraged me to go out of my comfort zone. It was fun. Something I would have not done without her. However, my answer to skydiving is still NO! At least for now…

Gift of Time

Typically, I love being out and about. Being with friends. Shopping. Going to the movies. Eating out. However, during this pandemic, I’m forced to take precautions as well as precautions taken for me (school closed, businesses closed, activities being cancelled, events postponed).

Despite the difficult situation and uncertainty of this pandemic, there is a silver lining. I have been given the gift of time.

Time to… *read more slices. *comment on more slices. *slow down and live in the moment. *enjoy quality time with my husband and 2 pugs. *read the book I haven’t been able to get back to. *straighten up the house. *finish incomplete projects from the past several weeks. *catch up on shows.

I hope you can find the silver lining during this difficult time as well. Be well and stay healthy!

An Ode to Pie

An Ode to Pie for Pi Day

Oh pie, how I love your varieties. Pumpkin. Caramel Apple. Coconut cream.

Oh, how you are so scrumptious, perfectly creamy, and just enough of a crunch!

Oh, how I enjoy your aroma when you are freshly baked!

Pie, you make me smile, my tummy oh so happy!

Thank you, Pie!

What to do with my day?

Slept in Ginger thought it was a win

All snuggled in bed with me Not ready to get up yet her eyes said as a plea

Have to start the day Even if in an unexpected way

Schools shutdown All around town

Sipping my coffee feeling troubled The unknown makes it doubled

Shelves of the grocery stores are bare During this scare

Avoiding the gym as a safety measure Until everything is better

Things being cancelled left and right When will we see the light

Now for what to do with my day On this day of gray

Just snuggle with the pups? Dishes? Laundry? Report cards? Venture out and get what is left at the grocery store? A modified workout?

Hmmm….
